Antimony is a semi metallic element which can exist in two forms: a stable metallic form and a non-metallic form. The metallic antimony is bright, silver-white, hard and brittle. The non-metallic antimony is a grey powder.
Metallic antimony is mainly used as alloying material of lead and tin in lead-acid batteries. Antimony alloys are also used in solders, bullets and plain bearings.
Antimony compounds are also consumed in many industries. Antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) is used to make flame- proofing materials. Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) is widely used in safety matches, military ammunition, explosives and fireworks.
