Super Performances of Alumina Ceramic Substrate in Automobile Industry

Alumina ceramic substrate has excellent comprehensive performance and is an important material in the field of the automobile industry, and it is of great importance to improve the performance of cars, reduce fuel consumption and exhaust pollution. With the continuous development of science and technology, more and more new materials and processes are adopted in the development and production stage of automobiles, which also makes it possible for people to demand light, low-cost, intelligent, economical and reliable cars. Alumina ceramic substrate has various excellent and unique properties, which is of positive significance for reducing vehicle quality, fuel consumption and exhaust pollution, improving engine thermal efficiency and wearing parts life as well as improving automobile intelligent function.

Application in the automobile engine

Alumina ceramic substrate can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius, which advances the development of new applications for cars. For example, it can be said that alumina ceramics is an indispensable material to reduce the fuel consumption of diesel engine by more than 30%. About 78 percent of the combustion energy in a gasoline engine is now lost in heat and heat transfer. Diesel engines have a thermal efficiency of 33%, which is superior to gasoline engines, yet more than 60% of the heat energy is lost. Therefore, the combustion chamber is insulated with ceramic material with good insulation performance in order to reduce the loss, and the exhaust turbocharger and power turbine are used to recover the exhaust energy. Experiments have shown that this can increase the thermal efficiency to 48%. Furthermore, it is possible for the diesel engine to start quickly because of the use of alumina ceramic substrate.

Applications on automotive sensors

The requirements of sensors for the automobile are that they can be applied to the unique harsh environment for a long time and should be small and light, with good reusability and the wide range of output. In recent years, with the progress of manufacturing technology, alumina ceramic substrate has been fully utilized for its heat resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and potential excellent electromagnetic and optical functions. The sensor made of alumina ceramic material can fully meet the above requirements.

Application in automobile shock absorber

The vibration damping device of the high-class car is a smart vibration damper developed by using the positive piezoelectric effect, inverse piezoelectric effect and electrostrictive effect of alumina ceramics. Due to the use of highly sensitive alumina ceramic components, the shock absorber has the function of identifying road surface and making self-adjustment, which can reduce the vibration caused by rough road surface of the car to a minimum.

In a word, alumina ceramic substrate is a kind of ceramic material product that is being developed continuously, but there are many problems to be solved in many aspects such as material preparation, material evaluation, and utilization technology. With the rapid development of science and technology, more alumina ceramic substrates and intelligent ceramic products will be adopted in the automotive industry in the future.
