Silicon is the most abundant electropositive element in The Earth's crust. It is a tetravalent metalloid, more reactive than germanium, the metalloid directly below it in the table.
Amorphous silicon appears as a brown powder while crystalline silicon has a metallic luster and a grayish color. Single crystals of crystalline silicon can be grown with a process known as the Czochralski process. Silicon carbide (SiC) is nearly as hard as diamond and is used as an abrasive. Silicon nitride is used in rotating bearing balls & rollers, cutting tools, engine moving & wear parts, turbine blades, vanes & buckets, metal tube forming rolls & dies, etc.
