Pure germanium metal is a hard, lustrous, gray-white, brittle metalloid, chemically similar to its group neighbors - tin and silicon.
Germanium metal is a semiconductor, mainly used in transistors, integrated circuits and various other electronic devices. Germanium's major end uses are in fiber-optic systems, infrared optics and in solar cell applications.
Germanium also forms many compounds. They are used for polymerization catalysts and have most recently found use in the production of nanowires.
