Phosphor Materials

Solid white light-emitting diodes (LED lighting) have become the new generation of energy-saving light sources in the 21st century. One of the important ways to achieve white light emission is to use the fluorescence conversion technology of rare earth luminescent materials.

Rare earth luminescent material is a new type of environmentally-friendly and energy-saving material. It can store energy after absorbing the energy of short wavelength such as sunlight, and then slowly release the stored energy in the form of visible light, which can still be bright after the light source is removed. It emits visible light in time and also has excellent properties such as high-temperature resistance, friction resistance, high strength, scratch resistance, flame retardancy, and high chemical stability. It is an ideal energy-saving and environmentally friendly long-life optical material in the fields of construction, transportation, and national defense.

A phosphor, most generally, is a substance that exhibits the phenomenon of luminescence. It emits light when exposed to some type of radiant energy. Fluorescent materials are used in applications in which the phosphor is excited continuously: cathode ray tubes (CRT) and plasma video display screens, fluoroscope screens, fluorescent lights, scintillation sensors, and white LEDs, and luminous paints for blacklight art. Phosphorescent materials are used where a persistent light is needed, such as glow-in-the-dark watch faces and aircraft instruments, and in radar screens to allow the target 'blips' to remain visible as the radar beam rotates.

In the case of LED lighting, the type of luminescence is specifically fluorescence, the emission of light caused by the absorption of blue light energy emanating from the LED chip. When a phosphor absorbs a photon of blue light it emits a photon of longer wavelength, extending the spectrum toward the red. Different phosphors have different emission characteristics and thus when combined with the blue light and each other, a high-quality light spectrum is produced. Phosphors are manufactured in ways to make the most suitable for consistent, high yield LED manufacturing. Most phosphors are packaged as powders of well-formed, micrometer-scale particles. These can be integrated into carrier materials that then coat and form LED components in many different ways. Stanford Advanced Materials (SAM) offers different phosphors for your choices.
