The Er3+ emission transition occurs in this wavelength range corresponding to 4I13/2→4I15/2. However, the Er3+ absorption itself is too weak to be directly pumped, so energy transfer is required. The most effective is the Yb3+ ion absorbed by the transition from 2F7/2→2F5/2, followed by energy transfer to the 4I11/2 Er3+ energy level and rapid non-radiative transition to the Er3+ 4I13/2 energy level, thereby emitting the expected fluorescence.
