Niobium, formerly columbium, is gray like other metals and takes on a bluish tinge when exposed to air at room temperature for a long time. It resembles the element tantalum and performs resistance against many chemicals. Niobium has a high ductility at room temperature.
In real reality, niobium, like several different metals, is grey. but, by means of applying a passifying oxide layer, we permit our metal to gleam in a lovely array of colors. but niobium isn't just pretty to examine. Like tantalum, it's far resistant in opposition to many chemical compounds and maybe without problems formed even at low temperatures.
Pure Niobium Applications
Niobium is unique because this high degree of resistance is executed at a quite low weight. We use this fabric to fabricate coin inserts of all shades, corrosion-resistant evaporation boats for use in coating technology, and dimensionally stable crucibles for the diamond increase. thanks to its excessive stage of biocompatibility, niobium is also used as a cloth for implants. thanks to its excessive transition temperature, niobium is the best material for superconducting cables and magnets.
Pure niobium has the subsequent homes:
High melting point of two 468 °C
Excessive ductility at room temperature
Recrystallization at between 850 °C and 1 300 °C (depending on the extent of deformation and purity)
High resistance against aqueous solutions and metallic melts
High solubility for carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen (threat of embrittlement)
