Boron carbide is the most important ceramic material for ceramic armor. This carbide ceramic is used in tank armor and bulletproof vests. Boron carbide is extremely hard to be penetrate by a single shot. What is more, boron carbide material is relatively lighted weighted, with a true solid density of about 2.5g/cm3. Recently, several countries are trying to provide extra protection for their combat vehicles, not only for solders.
Boron Carbide (B4C) is an ultra-hard ceramic material renowned for its exceptional hardness, low density, excellent wear resistance, and outstanding thermal stability. Ranking as the third hardest material after diamond and cubic boron nitride, it is widely used across defense, nuclear, industrial, and high-tech applications.
Its unique combination of properties makes Boron Carbide ideal for ballistic armor, abrasive tools, neutron shielding in nuclear reactors, refractory materials, and advanced ceramics. Boron Carbide products come in various forms such as powders, plates, sputtering targets, and specialized grades tailored for different industries.
Ballistic Armor: Lightweight yet extremely hard Boron Carbide plates are widely used in personal and vehicle armor systems, including bulletproof vests, tank armor, and helicopter armor tiles.
Abrasives and Cutting Tools: Due to its high hardness, Boron Carbide is used in grinding, polishing, and cutting applications, including nozzles for sandblasting and waterjet cutting.
Nuclear Industry: Boron Carbide’s high neutron absorption cross-section makes it essential for nuclear reactor control rods, neutron shields, and radiation protection components.
Refractory and Wear-Resistant Materials: It serves as an antioxidant additive in refractory bricks and castables, enhancing durability in high-temperature environments.
Chemical and Semiconductor Industries: Used as a precursor for boron-containing compounds and in semiconductor components due to its thermal conductivity and semiconductor properties.
