About Mischmetal
Mischmetal is an alloy containing in different proportions rare-earth metals such as Cerium, Lanthanum, Neodymium, Praseodymium, and also some other impurities like Fe, Mg, etc., sometimes also added intentionally (Fe up to 3-6%) to improve some mischmetal properties useful in special applications (flints, etc).
This alloy is mostly used in the following applications: nodular pig iron production and its casting, production of stainless / tool steels, production of some vacuum and heat resistant alloys, production of different battery alloys, etc. In particular, Mischmetal is widely used as the alloying additive in the ductile iron foundry and Ferro Silicon Magnesium(FeSiMg or MgFeSi) also as the alloying additive to Magnesium Ferro Silicon (MgFeSi), as nodulizer in the production of ductile iron.
Mischmetal can also be used as the alloying additive to Zinc-Aluminium alloy named Zinc-5 % Aluminum-Mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM), having a 95% Zn - 5% Al and traces of mischmetal (cerium, lanthanum), which is sometimes used for steel coatings, to enhance the product life for certain applications.
